Statement of More Light at OPPC
We confess our faith in Jesus Christ as Sovereign and Savior revealed in Scripture, interpreted by our confessions, and manifested in the church--the Body of Christ indivisible by race, age, gender, sexual orientation, physical, mental or emotional condition, culture, class and denomination. By Christ, the cornerstone of our faith, all members of Ormewood Park Presbyterian Church are called as "living stones" to build our "spiritual house" and serve as "a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ" regardless of how the world categorizes us as individuals (I Peter 2: 4-10)
As indicated in the Book of Order (W-4.2003), such faith implies renunciation of evil and injustice and reliance on, and regard for, God's grace, as well as active, full participation in the worship, mission, and governance of the church. Specifically, we renounce any injustice perpetrated by the church against gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered Christians and their families and friends, and we affirm our reliance on the inexhaustible grace of God and declare our regard for the grace of God manifest in the spiritual gifts of these, our sisters and brothers, as they actively and fully participate in the worship, mission and governance of our church.
We affirm with the early church that we are all called to serve as "God's own people, in order that (we) might proclaim the mighty acts of Christ who called (us) out of darkness into his marvelous light" (I Peter 2: 9). We affirm with the Reformers that "from darkness, light" as the church continues to be reformed, led by the Holy Spirit.
Therefore, we declare what we have been for years,
a session and a congregation that seek and offer "more light" in the church and the world on behalf of people marginalized or outcast because God has created them lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgendered. We pray and work for their full inclusion and participation in Ormewood Park Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), as we also pray and work for reconciliation, forgiveness, and unity in the Church universal.
